Match Report – Wick 4s vs. Ashford June 3rd 2017

Drama-Filled Defeat

Ultimately, the result went against the 4s; a loss by 1 wicket after Ashford successfully chased 133 to win. Whilst this result was disappointing to those involved, the primary emotions were a mixture of pride and enjoyment. Pride in the performance of the team, particularly in the field. And enjoyment because playing in a cricket match which is full of tension and drama is a great experience and one that never ceases to be enjoyable.

The 4s welcomed 3 players making their Surrey Championship debut – Ben Chapman who played Colts cricket at the club and is returning to the game after a break, U15 Sai Srirangam and U13 Connor Hewitt. The match started with the Ashford captain winning the toss and inviting Wick to bat. The batting order looked strong-ish on paper, with the regular bats joined by the Tiffin U15 openers Sai and Tim Jones, along with Abdur Rahman and Dhvanil Karia. The line-up had some risk within it (don’t 4th XI batting line-ups always?) and so the lower order included the skipper as insurance.

Phil Miles and Ben Houghton opened proceedings against a very accurate Ashford pair. The game was quiet during the early overs, offering no indication of the drama that would follow later. An easy-looking single almost reduced proceedings to a ‘carry-on’ style farce, when a mix-up in calling meant that both batsman sprinted and were injured; Houghton in the calf and Miles in the back. The latter’s injury was more serious and he was unable to bend sufficiently to deal with a delivery which kept low. Over the next few overs the scoring rate dried up and Houghton, Jones, Srirangam, DK and Rob Ritchie were dismissed in quick succession. At 50-odd for 6 thoughts of strong-ish batting line-up had been dismissed and the hope was to get somewhere near 120. Skipper Nick Dunmore joined Rahman and the two Ashford bowlers who had been operating for 20 overs began to tire. Short and wide balls were punished by both batsman; Rahman stylishly, Dunmore rather more belligerently. Having taken 20 runs off one over Dunmore was dismissed for 37, but the score was now 105. Ben Chapman quickly followed along with Rahman, for an important 20. Connor Hewitt was then joined at the wicket by Simon Boughey, and the team quickly realised that no one had never seen Simon bat! Over the next few overs Boughey blocked and left with aplomb, admirably supporting his younger partner who played several confident and powerful straight drives, before falling to a ‘hand-grenade’ for a well-made 14. The last wicket pair had taken the 4s to a total of 132.

Tea was taken, and the 4s felt that the batting recovery had produced a total that was defendable. We would need to bowl and field well, back ourselves and support each other; a focused effort in the second half of the game was required.

Upon taking the field it was immediately obvious that the team had the necessary intensity to produce the required performance. The noise level was high and the ground fielding aggressive and clean. Boughey and left-armer Chapman opened the attack, despite Chapman informing the skipper that he didn’t want to bowl up hill. Chapman’s first over began with two caught and bowled chances, the second of which Chapman snaffled. Boughey had found his line and length immediately and the Ashford batsman were under pressure. DK replaced Chapman up the hill and produced impeccable deliveries which worried both bats; removing the opening bat LBW. However, the Ashford number 3 looked like a good player and we knew that it would only take one sizable contribution to take Ashford to the required total.

After an excellent and unlucky 7 over spell Boughey was replaced by U13 Hewitt, full of confidence from his batting display. Hewitt took a wicket in his first of three good overs which included a

difficult dropped catch. The intensity on the field had been maintained at this point and over the remaining overs it was to increase as the pressure built upon the Ashford batsman. As a team the 4s ground-fielding held up well, despite 3 or 4 chances or half-chances being spilt.

Chapman was re-introduced coming down hill and the change was obvious from the start; increased pace, hostility, accuracy and rhythm showed the skipper that he had been wrong at the start of the innings. Wickets began to fall to Chapman as he and DK kept up the attack. But the Ashford number 3 was still at the crease and was scoring fast enough to take the score past 100. Resistance was broken when Chapman re-arranged the number 3’s timbers, leaving Ashford needing less than 30 with 5 wickets left. The intensity in the match that had slowly been building now came to a crescendo during a drama-filled hour of cricket. Chapman, DK and Hewitt bowled with great control, the fielders backed their bowlers and the Ashford batman felt the full force of a Wick squeeze. With runs at a premium, the Ashford middle and lower order were dismissed in a procession, including a remarkable run-out by Hewitt after the batsman wandered around and never make his ground. As the final pair came together the tension in the air was palpable and the winning runs were greeted with a roar of relief by the Ashford players.

Hands were shaken and both sides agreed that the game had been a good one to play in.

As a performance by a Wick 4s XI, this had been by far the best fielding effort that the writer has enjoyed with the club. All 11 players were outstanding in the field, with intensity and concentration that we could all feel and be proud to have been part of. The bar is now set for future performance levels.

Ben Chapman finished with 43-5 from 10 overs, a super return from a very good first outing in league cricket. Connor Hewitt’s performance was excellent for an U13; with bat, ball and in the field, he was always in the game and showed confidence and cricketing maturity way beyond his age.

The drama was over and the game was lost, but by goodness it had been a good game to be part of.

Match Report – Wick 4s vs. Egham May 13th 2017

A Match Full of Firsts

As the sun set over Bushey Park, Wick men and plus 1s enjoyed the FIRST social of the 2017 season. For those members of the 4s who were in attendance, this marked the final FIRST of a day that had been filled with many FIRSTS during a very enjoyable fixture away to Egham.

Upon arrival at Royal Holloway Sports Ground the 10 players of the 4s were met with two FIRSTS; sight screen and pitch cover not being part of 4th XI cricket at others venues. The team sheet contained three players making their FIRST appearance of the season; Ben Stephens, Tom Dunmore and Zarun. The latter is a Kingston University recruit (many thanks to GT for finding him). Nick Dunmore, in his FIRST game as skipper, won the toss and Egham were duly invited to bat given the rain that had fallen all morning.

The opening salvos were controlled by a new opening pair Simon Boughey and Tom Simcock, having his FIRST bowl for a while. The bowlers were supported by excellent ground fielding, with Rob Ritchie to the fore in his specialist position at backward point. The Egham batters showed limited appetite for risk, but possessed a good deal of luck, with Boughey finding the edge of the bat on 4 occasions. The initial breakthrough was achieved with a run out by Dunmore senior which had been preceded by an inelegant dive. The next 25 overs saw a steady fall of wickets which included a FIRST wicket in senior cricket for Tom Dunmore and FIRST Wick wickets for Chris Wakefield. At 70 odd for 5 after 30 overs confidence was high amongst the 4s. The next 10 overs saw a change in the weather as the sun come out and in nature of the contest as the home side responded. Egham’s #3 returned to the fray with a runner to protect his damaged heel and decided upon counter-attack. Ben Stephens and Nick Dunmore bowled a variety of medium, slow and very slow deliveries to try to stem the flow; Dunmore took his FIRST Wick wicket. However, the pressure started to tell on the 4s and catches were spilled. The assault was finally broken by Phil Miles who trapped the aggressive #3 LBW. This was a FIRST wicket for Miles in League cricket for the Wick, his previous 3 victims coming in friendly matches. The returning Boughey and Simcock finished off the Egham innings at a total of 166.

Tea was taken inside the Sports Centre, in a concrete changing room. The venue was odd and perhaps a bit off-putting, but surely a FIRST for the Wick players. 165 appeared to be a target that a strong-looking batting line-up could achieve, especially as the pitch was true and lateral movement has stopped some 2 hours previous.

Opening batters Ben Houghton and Phil Miles strode to the middle; by the conclusion of the first over Miles had been dismissed by an in-swinging yorker that rearranged the timbers. Zuran looked elegant and wristy whilst making 20 before he too was dismissed by a Yorker; though one that didn’t swing. Ben Stephens, coming in at #4, took a while to find his timing and sensibly opted to play himself in. Egham’s young leg-spinner bowled a good spell which included one over where he ripped 3 deliveries past the Stephens’ outside edge. At the other end Ben Houghton was showing the temperament and technique of an opener; playing watchfully to the good balls, leaving well and hitting anything short. Having spent the week watching YouTube tutorials, Houghton had kept tidily and with minimum fuss during the Egham innings, apart from one unnecessary demolition of all three stumps when attempting a run out. As the partnership between the two Bens’ developed the wicket-keeper batsman looked very secure. The innings reached drinks and the 100 was brought up. Stephens had now found his timing and the scoreboard was ticking over at a good rate. Houghton succumbed to tiredness and was trapped LBW, which brought Tom Simcock to the crease fresh from

8.3 overs and 3 wickets. Egham’s skipper continued to rotate his bowlers but Stephens was now dominating proceedings. Well struct boundaries took him to his FIRST 50 since July 2014 and a big 6 over mid-on concluded the match.

The Wick 4s had won their FIRST game of the season!

And so, to the FIRST social of 2017 including Thai green curry and beer. Later in the evening as the dancing began Ritchie, Houghton and Dunmore shared an ale or two and reflections were drawn at the bar. A team performance where everyone made telling contributions. A match played in a good spirit by two teams who whilst playing to win were playing to enjoy an afternoon of cricket. Having Ben Stephens in the side had been valuable to the whole team and his runs had secured our innings. One can only hope that the 4s see Ben again this season. Tom Simcock’s bowling was a welcome revelation. With bowling resources in the 4s looking thin on the ground until our University team-mates return, Simcock will undoubtedly be asked to bowl on a regular basis.

And a win, a FIRST win……

Match Report 6th May 2017

Match report: 4s vs. Malden Wanderers May 6th 2017

The 4s slumped to defeat in the opening fixture of the season against Malden Wanderers, yet there were – without wanting to sound like a chastened football manager wishing to appear upbeat – positives to take from the game. The bowling was tight, the fielding generally good, and the middle order staged a gritty fightback after a top order collapse.

Cathcart and Boughey opened the attack for Wick, and after the opening 10 overs only 20 runs had been scored. The tenor of the Malden innings was thus set. They struggled to get the ball away, and a particularly good spell of 9-0-23-2 by Adam Selves applied the brake to the middle of the innings when Malden were trying to get away. The most profitable partnership was of 76 runs between number three bat Cecil and Bartlett – one of several impressive youngsters playing for Malden – but at no stage did the runs come much faster than three an over.

All the Wick bowlers recorded decent figures, and a total of 173 off 45 overs at tea appeared eminently gettable. Such optimism was not to last long, however. Bowling from down the hill, Bryant bowled an immaculate off stop line, shaping the ball away, and inside the first five or six overs Ben Houghton, Mark Bannon and skipper Tom Simcock were all back in the hutch having edged behind to the keeper. Craig Daniel departed soon after. He had twice tested the fielders with steepling skiers and on the third occasion they snared it.

So Wick were four down for about 20 runs inside ten overs and the future looked bleak. That we edged increasingly and improbably closer to the target was due in large measure to a partnership between Adam Selves (making his bid for man of the match) and Jonny Allen. However, the asking rate climbed higher and higher, and though there was a lively cameo at the end of innings from Paul Baxter, the Wick innings closed almost 30 runs short of the Malden total.

Malden were a competitive outfit, scoring tough runs and bowling well throughout. A special mention should go to one of their youngsters. Morgan opened the batting with text-book style and then took five catches behind the stumps, one of them a blinder.

Match Report 29th April 2017

Match Report - Wick 3s vs. Battersea Ironsides 3s April 29th 2017

King's Field the Winner?

Cricket is a sport where the playing surface is of vital importance. Early season fixtures are more likely to be impacted by pitches that are not prepared to the full.

Both teams arrived at the King's Field looking forward to playing on what was by far the warmest day of the week. Inspection on the pitch showed a good covering of grass and rather a lot of green- the result of rain of Thursday and new growth. The Battersea skipper won the toss and it was no surprise that he invited Wick to bat first.

Opening batsmen Bilton and Simcock took to the field against a new ball pair who bowled with great control. It quickly became apparent that variable bounce was to be a feature of the match with some deliveries scuttling low whilst others reared to shoulder height from a good length. Wickets fell at regular intervals as the disciplined Battersea bowlers offered very few deliveries to hit. None of the Wick batters found attacking shots easy to play, with shots getting through the ball too early due to the lack of pace and bounce in the wicket. Deliveries that bounced more than expected appeared to be less of a challenge. Bilton, Dare, Basit and Dunmore fell to excellent catches. Only Phil Miles was able to occupy the crease for an extended time, and whilst he looked more in control than the other Wick batters, was unable to time the ball with any fluency. The innings closed at 68 after Graham Smith used his newly acquired bat to deliver a couple of lusty blows.

The skippers decided that 10 overs of the Battersea reply should be bowled before tea. Mo Basit took the first over up the hill and bowled a searing leg stump yorker to open the innings which demolished the batsman's stumps. With the next 5 balls being fast and challenging to the batsmen the thought came to mind 'can we defend this score?'. This thought was quickly discounted as the Battersea batters successfully countered the efforts of Basit and Smith and the pitch, despite the loss of a further wicket before tea.

Both teams enjoyed the offerings produced by Ken Gibson and his wife in the clubhouse and returned to the King's Field as the sun came out. Alex Dare had been introduced into the attack just before the break and was delivering sharply turning and bouncing off-breaks. His over after tea was quite remarkable: block, block, beaten, beaten, four, beaten. His next over started with a delivery that was going for a leg-side wide before turning sharply and missing off stump! A couple of lusty blows later and the batsman was stumped by Ben Houghton. This dismissal is one that offers promise for the season ahead; Dare was playing his first fixture for a few years and Houghton was keeping for the first time in 25 years. A single took Battersea to victory and the game was concluded, before 5pm.

It must be noted that Battersea appear to be a club moving forward; with 3s and 4s promoted last season. The side that visited the Wick will be worthy opponents for a full-strength Wick 3s during the season ahead.

Both sides rested in the bar, watching the 1s game as the clouds disappeared and a beautiful Bushy Park evening was enjoyed. The opposition commented on how they wished that their ground was as lovely. It had been a day to blow the cobwebs of the winter away and get out on the field. Despite the challenging playing surface everyone had taken something out of the fixture and was more prepared for league cricket next weekend.

Barnes CC v HWRCC 2nd XI – April 29th 2017

Some see pre-season friendlies as a waste of time - the threat of injury before the important league stuff begins, the inclement weather, the stench of last year's whites as the bag is opened for the first time since September (Ed).

But not here at the Wick. There were some new faces to check out, some off-season stories to tell.

And it quickly became apparent - the team spirit that served the 2nd XI so well last season remains. Especially when both the skipper and Ed Charlton were struck in the face by Barnes' answer to Alan Mullally. Cue raucous laughter from the boundary.

But let's go back to the beginning...

Collier stuck Barnes in to bat, wanting to get a good look at the bowlers. Thankfully a couple of the Barnes top five helped out by getting a half century and a rather good 140.

But despite the oppo amassing 273-9 off their 40... there were some impressive spells. Will Taylor (1-40) got some movement in the air and off the pitch and would have had at least one more victim but for some rather surprising teflon moments from the slip cordon.

Ed Charlton proved he's not a new ball bowler yet again, testing out Collier's leg side takes before returning for a much better second spell. James Adam impressed with (1-28) after he was politely asked to bowl normally! And Zeeshan Ahmed showed off his variations and with a better keeper and Blobs on top form could have taken a couple.

Sonny Patel took some tap from Barnes' centurion but also got two well deserved wickets and looks a real prospect.

Special mention also to Schalk van Vuuren who returned from nearly two years out after riding his bicycle under a taxi. The pace is yet to return but there were signs the old Prawn is not far from full fitness.

So to the run chase. Collier and Suggit opened up. Neither looked fluent ... and our friend from Yorkshire played and missed more times in five overs than Blobs did all last season - a splendid achievement.

The real star of the show was Haseeb Abbassi who smacked 57no and struck five sixes along the way.

Rory 'Blobs' Blanchard continued his decent early form with 39 before running himself out.

And of course Ed Charlton chipped in with an entertaining 25 which included being hit in the face and one of the worst shots ever to have been played (which went for 6!).

We were all out for 188 but for those of us playing our first game of the season - IT FEELS GREAT TO BE BACK. Bring on next week.

Colly.
