Match Report 12th August 2017

Match Report – Wick 4s vs. Woking & Horsell August 12th 2017James’s 5 Wickets Bring Back-to-Back Victories

Having initially been sent to the wrong ground, Wick 4s arrived at Waterers Road Park to be met with a strange sight; lush green grass which resembled a cow field. It appeared that the out-field of the cricket ground had not seen a lawn-mower for at least 3 weeks, and perhaps some hooved animals would have improved its’ appearance. Closer inspection revealed between 4 and 8 inches of cover, depending on the area of the ground. The pitch itself was greenish, pot-marked and rather daunting to batsman. Conversation with the opposition skipper supported the view that this would be a tricky place to bat – ‘inconsistent bounce and very slow pace is normal here’.

The Woking team assembled and appeared on the youthful side; their skipper won the toss and invited the 4s to bat. The 4s team was much changed from the side which had been victorious the previous week; Jacob Povah was on holiday after his 6 wickets, Hasseeb and Abdur had been selected by other Wick teams, whilst Tim Sturm and Hayoush was unavailable. 4s regulars Nick Dunmore, Ben Houghton, Simon Boughey and Rob Ritchie were joined by Mo Rashid, two ‘occasionals’ in Chris Wakefield and Paul Baxter and 4 colts. Of the colts, U13 Tom Dunmore had played the previous week, whilst U17 James Adam and U16 Dillan Goss were returning from holiday and U17 Daniyal Khawaja was playing only his second league fixture.

The 4s openers were Ben and Dillan and they faced an opening attack who could be best described as steady. The bowlers bowled good line and length deliveries, but didn’t challenge the batsmen with either pace or movement. Slowly, very slowly, the 4s batters accumulated runs. Dillan scored one boundary with a pull which almost carried for 6, but most scoring shots were ‘fielded’ by the outfield! Generally attacking shots yielded one run; on any other cricket ground they would have resulted in a greater tally. The opening partnership has reached 46 when Dillan hit a delivery that ‘stopped’ and was well caught in the covers for 22. The opening stand had set the 4s up to reach a challenging total. Rob was quickly dispatched by the umpire and Mo joined Ben at the crease. The scoring rate was not fast but wickets were in hand. By this point, Ben was well-set and happily accumulating singles, building on the form he had showed the previous week with his excellent 47. When he finally fell for 27 the score had reached 63 in the 28th over. The value of Ben’s innings was to become clear to all later in the afternoon, when the 4s lost their last 7 wickets for 21 runs. Batting time is a key skill and Ben has brought this to the 4s in his first full season for no-one knows how many years.

Skipper Nick joined Mo and provided some impetus to the innings as the Woking skipper brought his spinners into the attack. Both batsman used their feet and drove well, resulting in lots of singles, 2s and the occasional breath-removing 3. Unfortunately, both batsmen fell with the score on 95. The only partnership of any note during the remainder of the innings was between Tom and Paul, who put on 17 for the 7th wicket before Tom was run out as they attempted another 2. The final score of 116 reflected the hard graft that the team had produced with the bat and was certainly ‘worth’ at least 150 on a ground with a normal outfield. Pleasingly, the pitch had behaved throughout the 4s innings; with none of the threatened variable bounce being evident.

Post tea (which included scones) the 4s opening bowlers, Simon and Mo, took up the attack. Having not bowled for 4 weeks, Simon produced a spell which typified his skills and performances this season as the 4s primary opening bowler. With wonderful control of length and occasional movement into the batsman, Simon beat both Woking openers regularly. Neither batsman could find opportunities to score, but neither were they able to leave the ball. During 6 challenging overs, Simon has 2 good LBW appeals turned down, half a dozen play and misses and finished with 1 wicket for 8 runs. Marvellous! The tone had been set.

At the other end, after a tight spell, Mo was replaced by Chris and then by James, who produced a wicket in his first over. The next hour of play was dominated by the Wick bowlers. James bowled a beautiful spell of left-arm orthodox spin which yielded his first 5-fer in adult cricket. Attacking the stumps and extracting the occasional bit of turn, James challenged each batsman. The highlight of his spell was a perfectly pitched delivery which turned, took the outside edge and was snaffled low down by Mo at slip. As Mo commented ‘the classic left arm spin dismissal’. At the other end, Tom bowled a tight spell and Paul entered the attack and bamboozled the batsman with slow deliveries which landed on the perfect line and length. Figures of 5 overs, 12-2 perfectly illustrate the control Paul displayed.

It must be noted that the wicket continued to play slowly and with no variation in bounce throughout the Woking innings. One event illustrates the slightly farcical nature of playing cricket with long grass in the outfield; the Woking skipper mullered a cross batted straight drive past bowler James and the ball stopped less than 10 yards behind the umpire!

The final phase of the day saw the 9th and 10 th wicket Woking pairs face 10 overs from two young Wick 4s pace bowlers, Tom and Daniyal. Tom produced his best day with the ball in adult cricket. Bowling a full length, Tom swung the ball and made the batsmen play each delivery. He was rewarded with one wicket (a fine catch over his shoulder by his father) and created 3 other opportunities; a catch at slip from a front foot no-ball (harsh call on an U13?) and 2 very difficult one-handed chances which his skipper could not hang on to. Daniyal, playing only his second league match, and with very limited experience in outdoor cricket, bowled superbly. Showing good control of line, he bowled with pace and hostility and produced lots of challenging deliveries. In his second over, Daniyal induced an edge which neither keeper or 1st slip moved for, and with the last ball of the game he removed the leg-stump of the batsmen to secure back to back wins for the 4s.

Reflecting in the evening sunshine, this had been a very satisfying game for the 4s. In challenging conditions, the batsmen had made a score that always felt likely to be too much for Woking. The bowlers had applied pressure throughout, backed by excellent catching and perfect ground fielding, helped by the long grass. Ben and Simon had set the tone with bat and ball, but the man of the day was James; the Woking skipper graciously agreed to let him keep the match ball for his 5 fer.

Match Report 5th August 2017

Match Report – Wick 4s vs. Ashford August 5th 2017

Jacob’s 6 Wickets too much for Ashford

Standing at the end of his run, as he started his ninth over of the afternoon, Jacob Povah surveyed his field – 4 slips, gully, leg slip, cover and mid-wicket. The field was a response to the 5 wickets that Jacob had already taken during the afternoon, and each of the 9 Wick 4s teammates hoped that he would claim a deserved 6th. His run up was smooth, his arm fast and Jacob delivered the ball on a full length around off stump; the Ashford number 11 got part of his bat on an attempted drive and the ball flew high in the air over the mid-wicket fielder, U13 Tom Dunmore. With great agility Tom leaped to parry the ball before sharing a one-handed catch. The game was over, the 4s had won handsomely and Jacob had claimed 6-33.

Set an unlikely 250 to win, the Ashford innings had concluded on 173. The early exchanges of the innings were controlled by the Ashford openers who put of 50 without alarm. Wick opening bowlers Ben Chapman and Olly Coles found very little help from a superb batting wicket as the batsmen punished any balls delivered off line or length. The introduction of Jacob into the attack changed the innings. During a superb six over spell, he dismissed the top 4 Ashford batsman with fast, aggressive and accurate bowling. The highlight of this period of play was the off stump of the Ashford number 3 cart-wheeling across the turf as he was dismissed first ball. The 4s bowling attack was youthful and inexperienced but they did a great job, supported by excellent ground fielding and catching. Olly returned to claim 2 wickets in his second spell, Haseeb Abbessi took a wicket with his sharply turning leg spin, Tom Dunmore bowled two good spells without reward and Ben Chapman took a wicket in his final over. Of the 10 wickets to fall, 9 were taken by current Colts and the other by a former Colt of the club; a statistic which should make all Wick members very proud.

Earlier in the afternoon the game had been set-up by the 4s batsman. The Ashford skipper won the toss and invited the 4s to bat. The wicket looked great and so the 4s were confident of achieving the highest score of the season. Openers Hayoush Arora and Ben Houghton set out to lay a foundation for the team. They achieved this, and more, during a stand of 75 for the first wicket. Hayoush scored faster, with his straight drives a feature, and had just reached an excellent 50 when a leading edge was snared. Haseeb was the next man in and he and Ben moved the scored towards 120 before both were out in quick succession as the run-rate accelerator was pressed. Ben was out for 47, his highest scored for Wick. His innings lasted beyond the 25 over mark and was the perfect example of the role of opener at this level of cricket. During the final period of the 4s innings Tim Sturm and Abdur Rehman put together an undefeated stand of 131 to take the total way beyond anything achieved previously this season. Tim was making his debut for the club. His chanceless, undefeated knock of 43 included lots of quick singles,2, 3s and general encouragement for Abdur to run. Later in the day Tim also took a sharp slip catch and made a positive noise in the field. Let us hope that we welcome Tim into Wick sides more regularly in future. For Abdur, his innings of 72* was another fine knock in a season where he has been the 4s highest run scorer and most consistent performer with the bat. Abdur stuck lots of boundaries, both straight and square of the wicket and took full advantage when the Ashford bowling attack tired during the last 5 overs of the innings.

A victory by 76 runs was a suitable reward for a very fine performance by the team. Ashford 4s are a good team and we have had two very enjoyable fixtures with them this season; fixtures against a side that play the game in the correct spirit. The Ashford wicket is by far the best that the 4s have played on this season, as reflected in the high scores, and we look forward to visiting this lovely venue in 2018.

Match Report 15th July 2017

Match Report – Wick 4s vs. Kempton July 15th 2017

Kempton Beaten by Strong All-round Display

The 4s won for only the 2nd time this season in an enjoyable fixture against Kempton. The return fixture against this opposition had been called-off by the Kempton groundsman earlier in the season, so the 4s had little idea of the strength of the Kempton side. It turned out that Kempton were fielding 3 father and son combinations, who were the basis of the side on a regular basis. Thus, the Kempton team looked like a normal Wick 4s team, with some over 40s and three U13 colts. But this week Kempton were facing a Wick 4s team which was the strongest of the season so far, on paper at least. Moazam Ali Rashid, Dillan Goss and Will Strange were all making their 4s debut for the season. The team also included Haseeb Abbasi and Christopher Cole, along with regular players Phil Miles, Ben Houghton, Tom Simcock, Nabeel Shahpurwala, Abdur Rehman and Nick Dunmore.

The skipper won the toss and despite the drizzle, inserted the opposition. The first 3 overs saw Kempton get off to a ‘flier’ as 30 runs were posted. Christopher Cole took heavy punishment from his first two overs from one Kempton opener but responded magnificently to this challenge; the remaining 3 overs of his spell conceded a mere 2 runs and he captured the wicket of the batsman who had initially smacked his bowling. At the other end Nabeel Shahpurwala settled into what has become his usual exemplary line and length. Neither batsman found it easy to score and he beat the back on several occasions. Christopher was replaced by Moazam Ali Rashid having his first bowl for the 4s. Moazam’s bowling appeared to be the ideal pace for the slightly damp surface as the ball moved a little and gripped which created continuous doubt in the batsman’s mind. At the other end Nabeel was replaced by Abdur Rehman, fresh from a knock of 75 the previous week. Abdur also bowled at the perfect pace for the conditions of the wicket and runs became a premium commodity. Having conceded 30 from the first 3 overs, the bowlers now had the squeeze on Kempton and as drinks were taken at 22 overs the scoreboard read a mere 75.

Moazam claimed his first wicket with a slower ball; becoming not only the first Wick player this season to play for all 4 teams, but the first to take a wicket for all 4! Abdur removed the Kempton bat who looked most threatening when Christopher held a steepling catch a mid-wicket. Nabeel returned for his second spell and continued to put pressure on the batsman. During this period of the game the 4s Achilles-heel was visible, as several catches (some rather straightforward) were put down. However, the ground fielding was tight and the bowling accurate and Kempton were unable to accelerate their run-rate. A tiring Moazam was replace after 10 overs by Dillan Goss who bowled a lively spell which was rewarded with a wicket. At this point the skipper could finally turn to the spin of Haseeb Abbasi, as the ball was dry enough for him to grip. Haseeb bamboozled the remaining Kempton batsman during a 4 over spell of leg-spin and claimed 2 wickets. Christopher returned to take the final 2 wickets in consecutive balls and leave himself on a hat-trick in his next fixture.

Kempton’s final score of 161 reflected an excellent display in the field by the 4s. The bowlers had squeezed the run-rate out of the Kempton innings; with Nabeel, Moazam and Abdur the primary contributors to this phase of the innings. Christopher and Haseeb had then been able to take the wickets to ensure that the opposition were bowled out. Importantly, the pitch was now playing well, as it had dried out after the earlier drizzle.

Will Strange and Phil Miles opened the 4s innings and were met with a very accurate spell of bowling. Both batsman took singles but were unable to find the boundary for the first 5 overs, before Will delivered a couple of meaty straight drives. With the score in the 30s the first wicket fell when Phil was held at slip. The catch fell into the category of ‘excellent’ as the fieldsman had

snaffled the ball just above the turf. For consecutive innings, Phil had fallen to this type of catch; the cricketing gods are sure to turn soon. Tom Simcock strode to the middle and immediately set about playing himself in. The 2nd wicket partnership was dominated by Will who played in a more and more fluent way before falling for 39 to an overly aggressive shot to one of the Kempton U13 bowlers. Haseeb joined Tom and the run-rate continued to accelerate as both batsman found the bowling to their liking. Haseeb fell for a well-made 19 when he picked out a fielder. Dillan was next in and arrived at the middle with instructions from the skipper to ‘get yourself a nice little not out’. Dillan (22* at the close) achieved this but in a rather more aggressive way than the skipper had envisaged, striking several powerful straight shots to the fence. At the other end, Tom was now fully set and took full toll on bowlers who seemed intent on feeding his favourite pull shot. When the winning line was reached, Tom was 60* and had shown again how important he is to the 4s batting line up. The fixtures when Tom is available for the 4s (as opposed to the 3s) are those when the batting looks far more solid. With quite a lot of batting unused the 4s had comfortably reached the 162 set by Kempton to win, with 8 overs remaining.

This victory took the 4s above Egham and off the foot of the table; only 20 points behind Kempton. With player availability hopefully improving it has to be realistic to think that more victories will be claimed this season and that a final league position 1 or 2 places higher can be achieved.
